Empowering Communities: The Role of Path Keeper Groups in Cycling and Conservation

These groups not only focus on the physical maintenance of paths but also engage in fundraising for path improvements, and get involved in educational activities to raise awareness about the importance of paths for healthy living and as wildlife corridors; encouraging environmental stewardship across generations.

North Yorkshire Council can provide guidance for new or existing Path Keeper Groups.  Some Town and Parish Councils are also involved in looking after paths, as are village committees and local environmental groups. There are also numerous wildlife organisations who can support you with information and some grants, links here

If the path, or potential path, is within the National Park, you can contact the Ranger service or the Volunteer service for advice on how to get involved.

Friends of Helmsley Railbed have both improved and maintained a path for several years, with agreement from Duncombe Park Estate.

Join the Movement: Start or Become a Path Keeper Today!

Joining a Path Keeper Group offers a unique opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for wheeling or walking or horse-riding, and environmental conservation. As a member, you'll participate in activities that not only improve the safety and accessibility of routes but also contribute to the preservation of natural habitats.

Your involvement can make a significant impact on local initiatives and it's a great way to find good company and to get some fresh air and exercise. You can volunteer regularly, or on an occasional basis, at a level that suits your abilities.

Celebrating Our Path Keeper Groups: Achievements and Ongoing Projects

Path Keeper Groups are dedicated to enhancing local routes and enabling easier travel between homes and local amenities. Through collaboration and community engagement, they have achieved significant milestones in improving accessibility. These groups have successfully implemented new signage and safety measures, making paths more navigable and secure for everyone. Their efforts have not only increased the number of wheelers, walkers and riders, but also fostered a greater sense of community among local residents.

In addition to physical improvements, Path Keeper Groups have been instrumental in organising community events that celebrate active travel and environmental awareness. These events bring together people of all ages and skill levels, offering workshops and guided rides. These groups are setting the scene for a healthier, more connected community.
