Get Ryedale Cycling Forum

Initially founded as the Raising Cycling in Ryedale Group in 2013, the Ryedale Cycle Forum established itself as a group of like minded members with an interest in cycling.  The Forum adopted its website name Get Ryedale Cycling Forum in 2024,  It promotes cycling events, routes, and safer cycling. We are also interested in increasing the number of routes between our towns and villages; suitable for young and old, for walkers, wheelchairs, cycles, prams, dogs, horse riders and nature lovers. This includes road-side paths, off-road tracks and quiet country lanes. There are benefits to health, to the environment, and to the local economy. The forum is supported by North Yorkshire Council and currently chaired by Michael Cleary. It is attended by local cyclists, cycle shops, environmental groups, Parish Councils, the North York Moors National Park, Sustrans, North Yorkshire Council, Highways England, Cycling UK, and the Forestry Commission.

The forum meets every three months, usually via Microsoft Teams or Zoom. But members are often busy in between, with projects or tasks, via email or face-to-face meetings. Check out our Minutes and Agendas here, and don't hesitate to get in touch if something interests you.

Cycling Towards a Sustainable Future

North Yorkshire Cycling Strategy

Back in March 1999 North Yorkshire County Council adopted a North Yorkshire Cycling Strategy.

The overall objectives of the strategy are:

To maximise the role of cycling as a transport mode, in order to reduce the use of private cars for utility and recreational purposes;

To develop a safe, convenient, efficient and attractive transport infrastructure that encourages and facilitates the use for walking, cycling and public transport and which minimises reliance on, and discourages unnecessary use of, private cars;

To ensure that policies to increase cycling and meet the needs of cyclists are fully integrated into the Structure Plan, Local Transport Plan, the Road Safety Plan and all other relevant strategies to encourage the appropriate authorities to do likewise for the District Local Plans.

Part 2 of the strategy states: ‘Cycle studies for each of the major market towns, the two National Parks and other rural areas of the county will be carried out and where appropriate cycle plans developed and implemented. The Sustrans National Cycle Network will form an integral part of these plans’.
